How Many Miles Is 20,000 Steps? Why the 10-Mile Guess Misses
Twenty thousand steps is 8.7 to 10.7 miles for most walking adults, and close to 9 miles for an average-height person at an ordinary pace. The conversion is one multiplication: 20,000 × your step length. A 26-inch step gives 8.21 miles, a 28-inch step 8.84 miles, a 31-inch step 9.79 miles. The tidy 10-mile answer requires exactly 2,000 steps per mile, which means a 31.68-inch step. In the 2008 treadmill study by Hoeger and colleagues in ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal, walkers averaged 2,252 steps per mile at a 20-minute-mile pace, which puts 20,000 steps at 8.88 miles.
Why the 10-mile guess runs high
A mile is 5,280 feet. Divide that by 2,000 steps and you get 2.64 feet, or 31.68 inches, of ground per step. That is the stride the 10-mile answer quietly assumes you have.
Push it through the height rule that most step calculators run on — step length is roughly 0.415 × height for men, 0.413 for women — and 31.68 inches belongs to a man about 76 inches tall. Six foot four. Everyone shorter than that walked less than 10 miles.
The National Center for Health Statistics puts mean height for US adults aged 20 and over at 69.0 inches for men and 63.5 inches for women, with mean weight at 199.8 and 170.8 pounds (Anthropometric Reference Data for Children and Adults: United States, 2015–2018, Vital and Health Statistics, Series 3, No. 46). Run those heights through the same rule and the spread opens up:

The default sits above every real body in that table. It is not a rounding error either. For the average American woman it overstates the walk by 1.72 miles, which is another 34 minutes on her feet that never happened.
That 0.415 multiplier deserves its own look, because I cannot tell you who first measured it. Secondary sources hand it to ACSM materials, and other sources hand it to Tudor-Locke's step-count research, and none of them agree. Some calculators apply the identical coefficient to stride length instead of step length, which doubles every answer they produce.
I spent years typing admission medication lists in a hospital records office in Cleveland. The entries that worried me were never the messy handwriting. They were the ones copied so many times that nobody could name who wrote them first. I once typed a strength straight off a bottle whose label had been reused for a different tablet. The pharmacist caught it during reconciliation. She caught it; I didn't. A number repeated often enough stops landing as a claim at all. There is a bird outside my window that has been saying the same three notes since I sat down, and I stopped hearing it around minute two. Two thousand steps per mile is that bird.
My unpopular position, carried over from the records office: the bag of bottles beats the printed list every time. Your own counted walk beats every formula on the internet, including the one I just quoted at you.
What my own step length turned out to be
I took a hand tally counter to a high school track and walked four laps in lane one. World Athletics' Track and Field Facilities Manual has lane one measured 30 centimeters out from the raised curb, which is what makes a lap exactly 400.00 meters, so four laps is 1,600 meters. I counted 2,218 steps. The stopwatch read 20 minutes 6 seconds.
That works out to a 28.40-inch step (0.7214 m), a speed of 1.327 m/s or 2.97 mph, and a cadence of 110 steps per minute. Bohannon and Williams Andrews pooled 23,111 subjects in Physiotherapy in 2011 and found comfortable gait speed running from 1.43 m/s for men in their forties down to 0.94 m/s for women in their eighties, so 1.33 sits in ordinary territory.
Everything else falls out of that one number:

- Ten miles, for me, is 22,310 steps
The height formula predicted 28.22 inches for my 68 inches of height. It was 0.18 inch short, which compounds to 301 feet over 20,000 steps. Close enough to be useful. The 2,000-steps-per-mile default missed by 1.04 miles, or 21 minutes of walking I did not do. That is the difference between a rule fitted to bodies and a rule fitted to round numbers.
For the calorie math further down, my weight on the hospital's floor scale that week was 176 pounds (79.8 kg).
How to measure your own step length
This takes one walk and beats every estimate in this article, mine included.
- Pick a long course of known length. Four laps in lane one of a 400-meter track is 1,600 meters, or 62,992 inches. A certified road mile works too. A 100-foot sidewalk stretch does not: at roughly 42 steps, a single miscount shifts your 20,000-step answer by 0.21 mile.
- Get up to speed before the start line. Steps taken out of a standstill are short ones, and on a short course they poison the average.
- Count every foot strike, both feet, on a hand tally counter. Your phone's count is the thing you are checking, so it cannot be the thing doing the checking.
- Walk the way you actually walk. A demonstration pace gives you a demonstration number.
- Run a stopwatch. You want duration as well as distance.
- Divide. Course length in inches ÷ steps = your step length. Then 63,360 ÷ step length = your steps per mile, and 20,000 ÷ steps per mile = your answer in miles.
- Do it twice, on different days. Mine moved by about half an inch between a rested morning and the end of a shift.
Distance and calories are two different calculations
People land on the steps-to-miles question and slide straight into a calorie question, and the two run on different inputs entirely. Distance is geometry. Calories are physiology. Confusing them is how a walker ends up believing a heavier friend covered more ground on the same route.

The 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities rates walking at 2.8–3.4 mph on a level firm surface (code 17190) at 3.8 METs, and one MET is about 1 kcal per kilogram per hour. So calories = METs × kilograms × hours. My 3-hour walk at 79.8 kg comes to 916 kcal gross, of which 675 kcal is above what I would have burned sitting still. For the average US man, 1,038 gross and 765 above resting. For the average US woman, 812 and 599.
Here is the comparison that settles it. Two people walk the identical 8.96 miles at the identical pace. The 250-pound walker burns about 1,302 kcal; the 120-pound walker burns about 625 kcal. Same distance, same steps, more than double the energy. Body mass is doing all of that work, and it does not appear anywhere in the distance conversion.
Is walking 20,000 steps a day better than 10,000?
For all-cause mortality, the measured curve flattens well before 20,000. Paluch and colleagues pooled 15 international cohorts in The Lancet Public Health in 2022 and found risk falling as steps rise, then leveling off around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults 60 and over, and 8,000 to 10,000 for adults under 60. Nothing in that data says a second 10,000 steps harms you. It says the mortality benefit has already been collected.
What the extra steps do buy is time and expenditure. The CADENCE-Adults calibration studies established 100 steps per minute as the practical threshold for moderate intensity, about 3 METs. At my 110 steps per minute, 20,000 steps is 181 minutes of moderate activity, which clears the 150-minute weekly minimum in the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans in a single day. It also costs three hours. That is the trade I would put in front of anyone chasing the number: you are buying roughly 700 kcal of expenditure and a very long walk, and the mortality curve stopped paying you somewhere back around step 9,000.

About 8.3 to 10.1 miles. A woman of average US height, 63.5 inches per NHANES 2015–2018, has roughly a 26.2-inch step, giving 8.28 miles. Hoeger's 2008 treadmill data recorded women at 2,310 steps per mile at a slow pace, which is 8.66 miles, and 1,987 at a brisk pace, which is 10.07 miles.
How many calories does 20,000 steps burn?
Roughly 800 to 1,050 calories for most adults, of which about 600 to 765 is above what you would have burned at rest. Walking at 2.8–3.4 mph is 3.8 METs in the 2024 Adult Compendium, and calories equal METs × body weight in kilograms × hours walked. A 250-pound walker burns about double a 120-pound walker over identical ground.
How far is 2,000 steps?
Between about 0.87 and 1.07 miles, depending on your height and your pace. The familiar "2,000 steps is a mile" holds only at a brisk pace for a tall walker. At an ordinary pace it is closer to 0.9 mile. For my measured 28.40-inch step, 2,000 steps comes to 4,733 feet, or 0.90 mile.
