How Often Should Tires Be Rotated? The Figure You Need vs. the One You're Given

Rotate your tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. That is the range NHTSA's TireWise program publishes, and it applies only to vehicles whose manufacturer recommends rotation at all. Your owner's manual outranks the range: Toyota schedules rotation at 5,000 miles or six months, Subaru publishes 6,000 miles, Chevrolet Certified Service recommends 7,500 miles, and Honda releases the reminder through the Maintenance Minder instead of a fixed odometer figure. All of those numbers are proxies for one measurable quantity, which is the tread depth difference between your front and rear axles in 32nds of an inch. A tread depth gauge costs about five dollars and gives you that quantity directly.

What do the manufacturers actually specify?

The published intervals disagree with each other by a factor of two, which is the first clue that no single number is the answer.

The warranty column is the one drivers discover too late. Goodyear caps the interval at 6,000 miles. Yokohama asks for proof the tires were rotated every 5,000 miles. Michelin, Continental and General Tire allow 6,000 to 8,000 miles but want a completed rotation service record at claim time, along with the mounting date and the odometer reading at installation. Michelin also requires the tires to be evenly worn to 2/32 inch when you file. A driver following Ford's 10,000-mile oil-life ceiling can be compliant with the car and out of compliance with the tires on it.

NHTSA adds two exclusions worth reading before you book anything. For some vehicles, rotation is not recommended. And if your front and rear tires are different sizes, you may not be able to rotate them at all.

What figure does the mileage interval stand in for?

A new passenger tire leaves the factory with 10/32 to 11/32 inch of tread. Light truck and SUV tires typically start at 11/32 to 12/32. Forty-two states set 2/32 inch as the minimum legal tread depth, and US law requires tread wear indicator bars molded across the grooves that sit flush with the tread surface at that depth. Tire Rack recommends replacing at 4/32 inch for drivers who expect wet roads, because braking distance on a wet surface at 2/32 can reach roughly double what the same tire produced new.

That leaves about 8/32 inch of usable tread on a typical all-season set. Every 32nd of an inch of separation between your axles is an eighth of that budget spent on one end of the car and not the other. On a front-wheel-drive car the front tires can wear up to twice as fast as the rears, since the front axle steers, drives, carries roughly 60% of the vehicle's mass and absorbs 60% to 70% of the braking. Left alone, the gap does not close.

Your car opens that gap at a rate nobody publishes, because the rate answers to your drivetrain, your alignment, your inflation and your right foot. Two identical cars off the same line will differ.

I learned to distrust fleet-average numbers during the cutover at a Sheffield taxi firm, moving 140 drivers off two-way radios and onto an app. Under the radios, a car's mileage was whatever the driver said at the end of the week. The app logged it per vehicle. One car turned 41,000 miles that year and another turned 9,000, and both had been carrying the same service sticker with the same interval printed on it. The sticker was never wrong exactly. It was one number describing two vehicles living completely different lives.

How do you measure your own rotation interval?

You need a tread depth gauge and about four minutes. The penny test finds 2/32 inch and nothing else, which is far too late to be useful for rotation timing.

  1. Set the pressure first. Check all four tires cold, meaning parked at least three hours, against the value on the placard on the driver's door jamb. Pressure changes the contact patch, which changes where the tire wears.
  2. Measure each tire at three points across the tread: outer shoulder, center rib, inner shoulder. Record the shallowest of the three for that tire.
  3. Average the two fronts and the two rears and subtract. That difference is your gap.
  4. Write it down with the odometer reading. A dated photo on your phone does this in two seconds and doubles as the maintenance record a warranty claim will ask for.
  5. Repeat in about 3,000 miles. The change in the gap divided by the miles driven is your car's gap rate, in 32nds per thousand miles.
  6. Divide 2/32 by that rate. The result is your rotation interval, in your car, on your roads. Round down to the nearest published warranty limit and use that.

Two measurements replace a guess with a figure. Most front-drive sedans land between 5,000 and 7,500 miles; a stop-and-go city car with heavy front braking comes in shorter, and steady highway miles can earn 8,000. Drive so little that a year passes first and the clock takes over from the odometer, which is why Toyota writes 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. Low mileage carries a second deadline. The last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall give the week and year of manufacture, and NHTSA reports that some vehicle and tire makers recommend replacement at six to 10 years old regardless of tread.

At the taxi firm, every driver kept his radio in the glovebox for a full year after the handsets went live, and I understood why. A working habit does not surrender to better data quickly. If you measure your car and it tells you 7,800 miles, the 5,000-mile sticker in your windshield will still feel more trustworthy for a while. It isn't.

Which rotation pattern is allowed by your tires and vehicle?

The Tire and Rim Association defines three patterns covering most vehicles with non-directional tires and same-size wheels, plus two special cases.

Check the sidewall before you jack anything up. A rotation arrow or the word "rotation" means the tread is directional, and crossing it to the other side reverses the direction the tread was designed to turn, which costs wet grip and adds noise. A staggered fitment means the rear tires are wider than the fronts, for example 245 up front and 275 at the rear, and they cannot trade ends at any interval.

If you carry a full-size matching spare, Tire Rack advises folding it into the pattern from the beginning, using a forward cross on front-drive cars and a rearward cross on rear- and four-wheel-drive cars. Five tires sharing the wear last longer as a set than four, and on an all-wheel-drive vehicle the spare stays close enough in tread depth to be safe to fit when you need it.

Tire rotation vs. wheel balancing: which one fixes what?

These two services are sold together and quoted together, and they solve unrelated problems.

Rotation changes which corner each tire occupies. It manages the rate at which the four tires wear relative to one another, it runs on a schedule, and it needs a jack and a torque wrench. Balancing corrects uneven mass distribution around a wheel and tire assembly by adding small counterweights. It stops vibration, usually felt between 50 and 70 mph, it requires a spin balancer, and it is triggered by a symptom rather than a mileage figure. NHTSA states that new tires should always be balanced when installed.

Rotation will not cure a vibration. Balancing will not correct a wear pattern. Rotation can move the symptom. An out-of-balance wheel sent from the front axle to the rear stops shaking the steering wheel and starts shaking the seat, which is why a vibration sometimes seems to change character right after a rotation appointment rather than disappear.

On price, a standalone four-tire rotation runs $20 to $50 at most chains and independents, with dealer and full-service quotes reaching $60 to $75. Standard spin balancing runs $15 to $25 per tire, and road-force balancing $25 to $50 per tire. Costco, Discount Tire, Sam's Club, Les Schwab and Big O rotate free for the life of tires bought there, which is the single cheapest way to keep the warranty record intact.

What torque do the wheel nuts need, and when do you check it again?

Wheel nut torque is vehicle-specific and printed in the owner's manual. A 2025 Toyota Camry calls for 76 lb-ft, which is 103 N·m, on all wheel nuts. Passenger cars generally sit in the 80 to 100 lb-ft band, half-ton and heavy-duty trucks in the 100 to 150 lb-ft band. A Camry LE rides on 205/65R16 tires from the factory, with 235/45R18 and 235/40R19 on other trims, and every one of those wheels takes the same 76 lb-ft.

Three details decide whether the number means anything:

The re-torque is the step that gets skipped, because it happens days later and nobody is holding a clipboard. At the taxi firm, that was exactly the class of task the handsets were good for. A paper card handed to a driver never came back. A prompt fired at the right odometer reading, on the device already sitting in the mount on his windscreen, came back roughly every time.

Why rotation is wasted without the placard pressure

Set your pressure against the placard on the driver's door jamb, which carries the value required under 49 CFR 571.110 for your exact vehicle, not against the maximum figure molded into the tire sidewall. Check monthly, including the spare, with the tires cold. NHTSA reports that properly inflated tires can extend the average life of a tire by 4,700 miles.

The dashboard light will not do this job for you. Under FMVSS No. 138, a tire pressure monitoring system has to warn the driver only when a tire falls 25% or more below the placard pressure, and it has up to 20 minutes to do it. On a car placarded at 35 psi, the light stays dark until around 26 psi. NHTSA's own survey of model year 2004 to 2011 passenger vehicles found 12.4% running with at least one tire severely underinflated by that definition. Drivers treat that light as a prompt to check pressure. It is an alarm for a tire already a quarter down.

The reason this belongs in a rotation article is that inflation and rotation produce the same failure when they go wrong. Consumer Reports projects that close to half of the 47 all-season tires in one round of its tread-life testing would reach at least 65,000 miles, with a handful passing 85,000. Those projections come from a test where the tires were measured, rotated and pressure-checked every 1,000 miles and the vehicle was aligned. The rated mileage on a tire assumes a maintained tire. Nobody in the industry publishes a clean controlled figure for what skipping rotation alone costs you, and the ones circulating attributed to Consumer Reports or NHTSA do not appear in either organization's published material.

Is it okay to rotate tires every 10,000 miles?

Only if your owner's manual allows it and your tread gap stays under 2/32 inch at that mileage. Ford's schedule can reach 10,000 miles through the oil-life monitor. Most tire treadwear warranties will not: Goodyear caps the interval at 6,000 miles, Yokohama at 5,000. Measure before assuming.

Should you rotate tires at every oil change?

That habit worked when oil changes came every 3,000 miles. Full synthetic now runs 7,500 to 10,000 miles on many cars, so one rotation per oil change can exceed every published tire warranty limit. Toyota's schedule answers this by rotating at the 5,000-mile midpoint between 10,000-mile oil changes.

What happens if you do not rotate your tires?

The drive axle wears faster and the set stops wearing out together. On a front-wheel-drive car the fronts can wear up to twice as fast as the rears, so you buy two tires early and discard rear tires with usable tread left. Uneven wear also voids most treadwear warranties outright.
